Congratulations to KING5 anchor Lori Matsukawa, who was just inducted into the Silver Circle by the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Lori co-founded the Seattle chapter of AAJA, has mentored countless aspiring Asian American broadcast journalists and been a guardian angel of our chapter. AAJA congratulated Lori with a full-page program ad at the regional Emmy dinner on June 7.

The AAJA Seattle chapter and AAJA members around the country bought this ad together.

DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS:  Up to ten scholarships are available for this APME NewsTrain event for young print and broadcast journalists and journalism students of color who are pursuing careers in journalism. Scholarships will cover the registration cost of NewsTrain and may cover some of the recipient’s accommodations and travel expenses. NewsTrain host committees will review applications and choose the recipients. · Social Media Reporting Tools: Social media platforms contain powerful reporting tools that can be valuable to reporters facing big breaking news stories or enterprise projects. This session explains how to use social media platforms and onsite tools to locate expert and “real people” sources, for “crowdsourcing” using advanced search features on major social media sites and for curating social media content to augment your own content.
· Maximize Your Social Media: So you’re a journalist on social media, but not so sure you’re taking the right approach? This session offers tactics and tips to improve your comfort on social media, establish your brand, encourage community engagement and measure how well your social media efforts are working over time.
· Smartphones for Journalists: A guide to the best apps, web sites and other tools for reporters working in the field.
· Digital Storytelling: How to approach the development and presentation of breaking news and enterprise packages for both print and online platforms.
· Enterprise off a Beat: A session aimed at reporters and editors on spotting and developing enterprise stories off a busy beat. This session offers different ways to measure the accountability of public and private institutions and suggests a variety of story forms that can be used to quickly develop a series of short to mid-range enterprise pieces. The goal is to build a sustained body of enterprise coverage while juggling the many demands of beat work. More

Job description:
The community engagement editor for the Seattle Times-Solutions Journalism Project will bring a startup mentality and passion and tenacity for seeking solutions to the big questions facing education. In this one-year position, the editor will develop and manage a blog for the project that will become the region’s destination for education conversations. This editor will edit and curate staff and community contributions and conversations, making the blog a destination for the latest news and most innovative thinking on education advances and policies.
The hallmark of this editor’s efforts will be developing and executing on a successful in-person and digital engagement strategy that connects with all facets of the community, reaching beyond the education experts and journalists to include parents, teachers and community members – particularly from underserved neighborhoods throughout the Puget Sound region.
 
Duties will vary depending on our needs and your strengths but may include:
Start up, edit and curate a blog 
Engage community members in person, on social media and via online interaction 
Recruit community members to contribute to the blog
Identify and cultivate partnerships with community organizations and media partners
Drive readership and community engagement
Conduct outreach for and participate in community forums

Qualifications:
Copy editing skills
Understanding of how people use digital tools to produce and consume information and share ideas
Knowledge of AP style, understanding of SEO principles
Strong social media skills
Familiarity with content management tools, including blogging platforms such as WordPress

This job is for you if you have:
A passion for education issues
Big ideas about digital journalism tempered with practical know-how and the ability to get things done
A desire to inform and engage with community members online and in person in innovative ways
 
Preferred candidates will have a bachelor’s degree and five years of experience in journalism or a related field, with extensive digital experience.

Rock Box party: An AAJA Seattle sendoff for David Boardman on July 29

Join AAJA Seattle as we say goodbye to Seattle Times Executive Editor David Boardman. Boardman is leaving to become dean of the School of Media and Communication at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa.

Boardman has been a champion of AAJA and the Seattle chapter, supporting our scholarship, donating auction items to our lunar banquet and coming to our annual Northwest Journalists of Color Scholarship night. He is one of the few executive editors in the nation who makes it a priority to personally attend our national convention. I could not have served as AAJA national president without his support.

You may remember Dave’s karaoke rendition of “No Woman, No Cry” from our lunar banquet. Or perhaps you saw the legendary performance of “Proud Mary” he did with former Washington Post executive editor Marcus Brauchli at the UNITY convention in 2012. This is your last opportunity to duet with Dave in Seattle. Let’s see if we can get him to sing “Baby Got Back.”

Seattle Times Publisher Frank Blethen is challenging you to support the Asian American Journalists Association with a donation to the Power of One campaign. For all donations from July 15 through Aug. 5, Frank will match all funds raised up to a total of $2,000.

The Power of One fund supports AAJA’s important work on increasing the number of Asian Americans in journalism and ensuring fair and accurate coverage of Asian and Asian American communities.

AAJA President Paul Cheung turns 40 Sunday. We just didn’t think that a card was enough for our global-interactives-managing, Instagram-bombing, data-loving, responsive-designing AAJA president. So we did the (fake) Harlem Shake.

George is a broadcast reporter for NBC Bay Area in California. During his term as vice president, George launched AASBJ to support Asian American student broadcast journalists, AASMBJ to help small- and mid-market broadcast journos and the Asian American Radio Group. He has mentored countless Asian American students and has a constant waiting list to critique stand-up tapes for early-career journalists and students.

If you’ve been to an AAJA convention, you may know him as organizer of the annual massive Korean BBQ night. For many years he held the most political position in AAJA: host of the convention’s karaoke night.

I know I’m one of the faithful members who would go to an AAJA convention even if it was in Detroit. (I did, and had a ball.) But I don’t represent all of you who are choosy about how to spend your hard-earned money and time. So here are five reasons why you should register for the AAJA Convention in New York, Aug. 21-24, before early-bird rates end Tuesday, April 17. Rates are $225 for pro members, and $100 for students until end of Tuesday.

  1. It’s in New York, the media capital of the world. That means you’re going to meet editors and hiring managers you will not meet at another AAJA convention because it’s in their backyard. It’s a great way to network even if you aren’t actively job searching.
  2. Programming is getting a makeover. I’ve seen a dramatic transformation in AAJA’s convention sessions over the past five years. Thank you to everyone who came to the UNITY Seattle mixer on Tuesday night! We had a crowd of about 20 journalists of all backgrounds at Lucid Lounge in the U. District: Asian American, Latina, white, gay, student, professor, digital, TV, radio, nonprofit, ex- and job-seeking journalists.

We projected the #UNITY12 Twitter stream up on a screen and UNITY and alliance presidents Joanna Hernandez, David Steinberg, Doris Truong, Rhonda LeValdo all joined us via Twitter. UNITY Programming Co-Chairs Paul Cheung and Robert Hernandez also joined in the event via Twitter.

AAJA Seattle President Sona Patel announced a convention grant the chapter will award to help a laid-off journalist attend UNITY. She also highlighted the Northwest Journalists of Color scholarships, deadline April 15. This year the winner will receive a grant to attend the convention as well. Former scholarship winner Peter Sessum spoke about how the scholarships changed his life.

We raffled off two “J” pins and a $50 gift card to Lucid Lounge. Congratulations to the three winners, all students at the University of Washington. Thank you to Lucid for donating the gift card. If you haven’t been to Lucid lately, they have a new elevated stage and a great digital presentation setup (they handed me an iPad to run the slideshow).
